It is easy for our generosity to fall into the hands of greedy bureaucrats, into the hands of thieves and parasites. It is easy for it to induce the frail into permanent weakness and dependency. It is also possible for it to properly serve the needy in their time of need, be that one day or fifty years. Generosity needs thoughtful oversight and should not be guided by sentiment, whether pity or impatience. – E.O.
