Lies, damned lies, and facts. Let’s say your general narrative is like a newspaper. In your paper you display stories on the front page that strongly support your narrative. In the middle pages you print articles that mildly support your narrative. Neutral stories go on the back pages. You leave out altogether any articles that contradict your narrative. What is this? It is a newspaper filled with good, factual information but that is profoundly dishonest. This is not hypothetical—it is the norm of how news is presented. It is difficult for all of us to recognize this tendency in ourselves as we convey our “realities” to others. – E.O.
