In his excellent book “Don’t Be Canada,” Tristin Hopper writes that our Canadian neighbors have discovered that “medical assistance in dying” results in significant savings to the healthcare system. A 2017 report found that MAID “could reduce annual health care spending across Canada by between $34.7 million and $138.8 million,” far exceeding the cost of implementation. It’s unsurprising, then, that subsequent research has found that the program has become at least the fifth-leading cause of death in Canada, claiming a reported 13,241 lives in 2022, up from 1,018 in 2016. We should never feel compelled to end our lives, but the pressure becomes difficult to escape when assisted suicide is the law of the land.
