“Having taught in public schools for 28 years, I think I have heard every self-serving argument against school choice. The most revealing one came from a local school principal. This career educrat argued that vouchers were a bad idea because families would grab the vouchers, scurry off to private schools, inundate those private schools and overwhelm them. I was an unindoctrinated late-comer to the education profession, and this sounded like a backhanded endorsement of vouchers. Denying choice is denying that parents, largely educated at public schools, are qualified to make intelligent choices. In general, systems that don’t work have to close off the escape routes and rely on captive audiences. The teachers unions pay good money to stymie school choice.” – Jeffrey R. Smith
