Jesus is the only person who could have failed at being crucified. The rest of us would struggle and scream until the soldiers pummeled and whacked us into semi-consciousness, making us docile while we are nailed to our crosses. Jesus, on the other hand, was required to consciously permit every blow and every violence committed against his body. He had to force himself to not call 12 legions of (60,000) angels to come to his rescue. Can you imagine the fury and might that would have been displayed in that invasion? It would have meant the leveling of Jerusalem, a severe thinning of Jewish religious leaders, and the removal of Rome from the Levant. At least, that’s what I imagine. This is what is meant when they say, “He laid down his life”. – E.O.
