We really must select our federal executive and legislative office holders through a lottery system. The recent selections by the Democratic and Republican parties to run for the Presidency is more than enough evidence to show a lottery would be an improvement on that branch. And the preoccupation with the parties with making each other fail, with the consequence that Congress has become an annoying collective figurehead provides the evidence for that branch. There would need to be some eligibility parameters, of course, and some reasonable adjustments to the terms of office, but those are not problems that any college-level political science class couldn’t handle as a project. Wouldn’t it be delightful to have our country run by a broad spectrum of relatively normal people? – E.O.
