It seems to me that the most common mental disease is self-delusion. This is commitment to a “reality” formulated out of personal preferences. The commitment will find individuals at odds with their actual experiences, of course, which creates inner turmoil. The turmoil is often “treated” with escapist behaviors, including mind-altering chemical, which provide temporary relief but almost always lead to greater mental disturbance. Chosen delusions are not easily rejected. A return to reality requires rejection of thought-patterns and life-style choices. It may require the abandonment of treasured relationships. On the other hand, reality does not take kindly to delusion. It is a fierce, pursuing hound that cannot be outrun. – E.O.
