“I would like to add a relatively modern justification for the indispensability of free speech: troubleshooting. It’s what technicians call the process of determining the cause of a problem in order to fix it. It’s an honest examination of a system and its faults aimed only at repairing them, something we should apply to social problems as well. But troubleshooting, of either kind, can only work if the free exchange of theories and the data and facts supporting them can flourish. Unfortunately, we currently put political correctness ahead of actually solving issues. As a result politicians frequently waste taxpayer money on programs that can’t actually ameliorate societal problems because they can’t talk about the real causes.” – James August
