“The unions deserve a great deal of the blame for why our education system is so calcified. But they alone don’t account for the failure of our schools to improve. They’ve had help—critical help—from government. The cycle goes like this: The union takes money from classroom teachers, who get paid by taxpayers, and use it to elect and lobby the politicians, who then increase the funding for schools and thus the union coffers. Elected officials ultimately do the real work of preserving the union bosses’ monopoly and fighting against education freedom.” – Betsy DeVos
